Build the reef. Master the flow.
Independent buyer guides for new and upgrading reef-keepers — protein skimmers, reef lighting, flow and circulation, and the stability gear that keeps a saltwater tank alive. The gear compared on the specs that decide the purchase, the rookie mistakes spelled out, and a matcher that works out your turnover, skimmer rating and PAR target from your tank size and coral type. Written by a reefer who crashed his first tank and would rather you didn't.

Choose your path
Three doors. Where you start depends on whether you are still planning the build, ready to buy the heart of the system, or want your numbers worked out first.
I'm setting up my first reef tank
Read the start-here guide. Why stability beats stocking, the slow cycle, sizing a skimmer, turnover by coral type, PAR by reef group, and the rookie mistakes to skip.
Open →I want the right skimmer and flow
The skimmer and flow are the heart of a reef. Compare protein skimmers by rated tank volume and air draw, and wavemakers by turnover, in the buyer guides.
Open →I want my numbers worked out for me
Use the Reef Matcher. Enter tank volume and coral type and get turnover, skimmer rating band, return-pump GPH, PAR target, heater wattage and ATO sizing.

Skimmers & Filtration
Protein skimmers, sumps, return pumps, media reactors and filter socks compared — what a skimmer actually does and how to size one to your tank's real bioload.
View guides →Reef Lighting
PAR, spectrum and coverage by coral type — soft, LPS and SPS. How much light each reef group really needs, and the over-lighting trap that fuels new-tank algae.
View guides →Flow & Circulation
Turnover rate by reef type, powerheads versus wavemakers versus gyres, and where to place flow so corals get random turbulent motion and no dead spots.
View guides →Stability & Livestock Support
Heaters, ATO, dosing and test kits — the stability stack that keeps a reef alive. Hold the parameters steady and the reef takes care of itself. Home of the Tools.

Best protein skimmers
Protein skimmers compared on rated tank volume, pump, air draw and type — the cleanest path to a skimmer sized to your real bioload.
Best reef lights
Reef LED lighting compared on PAR, spread, spectrum and coverage — matched to soft, LPS and SPS coral by what each group actually needs.
Best wavemakers & powerheads
Powerheads, wavemakers and gyres compared on GPH, flow type and controllability — the turnover that keeps corals fed and free of dead spots.
Best reef tank heaters
Titanium heaters and controllers compared on capacity, accuracy and control — the stability gear that holds your reef steady through the night.

Who writes here
Coral & Flow is founded and written by Daniel Cortez, a reef-keeper in San Diego who came to saltwater from freshwater, crashed his first tank by rushing the cycle and undersizing the skimmer, and has run a stable mixed reef for 8+ years since. He started the site so beginners get to a stable first reef instead of a crashed one. Guides also draw on rotating contributors from local reef clubs. Product comparisons stay neutral and spec-led — no fabricated hands-on testing. Read more about how we work →
Keep a planted tank too? Daniel came to saltwater from freshwater, and our freshwater counterpart — Planted Tank Hub for planted aquascaping — is the sister site for that side of the hobby. Coral & Flow itself stays strictly saltwater reef.
